A Weekend In Mexico City

Mexico City, a place rich in history, culture, and vibrant life, offers incredible experiences for everyone. Whether you have a couple hours to explore or you’re staying out there for a weekend, you can still uncover some of its most captivating highlights and hidden gems. Here’s your perfect itinerary to make the most of a short visit.

A Bit of Mexico’s History

Mexico, the heart of Aztec civilization, has a complex history reflected in its capital. Founded as Tenochtitlán in 1325, the Aztec island city thrived before the Spanish conquest. In 1519, Tenochtitlán fell, and the Spanish built a new Mexico City on its ruins, fusing European and indigenous influences. The city has endured centuries of change, becoming a vibrant metropolis that remembers its past.

Zócalo Central

A place that would be ideal to visit is Zócalo, the historic center of Mexico City. Home to the Metropolitan Cathedral, one of the largest and oldest cathedrals in the Americas, and marvel at the ancient ruins of Templo Mayor, the main temple of the Aztec capital, Tenochtitlan. Stroll along Madero Street, catching Aztec dancers and browsing the shops, cafes, and historic buildings lining this lively pedestrian square.

Art, Culture, and Authentic Neighborhoods

Some of the neighborhoods you’ll want to visit are Coyoacán and Roma. Coyoacán is a great bohemian neighborhood to explore, located there is the Frida Kahlo Museum, also known as La Casa Azul (blue house), where the famous artist lived and worked. The museum provides an intimate glimpse into her life and artistic journey. Make sure to stop by the Mercado de Coyoacán for a taste of traditional Mexican snacks like churros and elotes.

Frida Kahlo Museum

The second neighborhood that is a must visit is Roma. Known for its charming streets, art galleries, and trendy cafes, Roma is perfect for leisurely exploring. Visit the Mercado Roma, a gourmet food market, to sample a variety of local and international cuisines. You can finish off the day with a cocktail at one of the neighborhood’s stylish rooftop bars, enjoying a panoramic view of the city.

Historical Sights

Some historical sights you’ll want to see are the ancient city of Teotihuacan, located about an hour outside of Mexico City. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to some of the most impressive pyramids in the world, including the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon.

Xochimilco’s Trajineras

Xochimilco is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site where you can enjoy a traditional boat ride along the ancient canals on a colorful trajinera (canoe). Xochimilco is a place where history and vibrant culture cruise hand-in-hand.
